Things you need to know about joining the choir

WHY “COMMUNITY CHOIR”?

Our choir is run on a Not for Profit basis – most of those involved in running it are volunteers. We keep the fees low, so cost need not be a barrier to joining. Anyone can join, regardless of musical experience. We often put on concerts raising funds for charities – local, national and international. We perform at no charge for local community events, both large and small.  As a choir, we aim to become a community of our members.

WHO CAN JOIN THE CHOIR?

The choir is open to everyone from the age of 11, (although we do ask anyone under 16 to be accompanied by a responsible adult). We welcome people with a wide variety of singing experience – or none. You don’t need to read music (as we learn songs by ear). You do need to be able to attend regularly (if possible at least 3 out of every 4 weeks), so that we can all learn, and together improve our singing and performances as a choir

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME?

Our choir is made up of people with a wide range of singing experience and abilities. This means we need those who are new to singing in a choir to be prepared to learn and take direction.

Likewise, we need experienced singers to be prepared to support and be patient with those just starting out. We all need to be guided by our director and conductor Caroline who draws out our best performances from us. Above all, we all need to be committed to learning together, and improving as a choir.

We expect our members to attend the rehearsals regularly and also practice during the week. To help us to practice, we have from time to time videos or audio files teaching the vocal arrangements of each song.

Like all choirs, we love to perform and so every year we have a number of concerts and other performances scheduled, which are long term commitments. Naturally we do not expect everyone to take part in every performance, but we do ask members to plan to take part in some events during the year.
